Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Does it hurt?

This is one of the most common — and understandable — questions we receive.

This is one of the most common and understandable questions we hear. The quick answer is “No”, not for most people. TMS is non-invasive and does not require anesthesia, sedation, or muscle relaxants. You remain awake, alert, and seated comfortably throughout the entire treatment session. Most patients describe the sensation as a tapping or clicking feeling on the scalp during the session. Because the magnetic pulses stimulate superficial nerves and muscles in the forehead, the sensation can feel unusual at first. Some people experience mild scalp discomfort or sensitivity during the first few treatments. Importantly, this sensation typically improves as the brain and scalp adjust during the first week of treatment. If needed, stimulation settings can be carefully adjusted to improve comfort while maintaining effectiveness. It is also important to clarify that TMS is not electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Unlike ECT, TMS does not involve electrical currents passing through the brain, does not induce a seizure, and does not require anesthesia or recovery time. Patients drive themselves to and from appointments and return immediately to normal daily activities.

Because TMS does not circulate through the bloodstream, it does not cause the systemic side effects commonly associated with medication, such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or sedation.

At Bluegrass TMS, we prioritize comfort and transparency. During your first visit, we explain each step of the process so you know exactly what to expect.

If you have concerns, we encourage you to discuss them with us — we are happy to answer questions and ensure you feel informed before beginning treatment.
