Dr. Koval completed his undergraduate education at West Virginia University and earned his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1990. He then relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, where he completed his psychiatry residency followed by a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Upon completing his training in 1995, Dr. Koval joined the teaching faculty at MUSC.
During his 20-year tenure at MUSC, Dr. Koval served in multiple leadership roles. His clinical work included serving as an attending psychiatrist on the Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit, where he was ultimately appointed Director of Inpatient Services for Youth. He also served as Director of the Child Consultation/Liaison Service to the MUSC Children’s Hospital and as Associate Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program. Throughout his time in academic medicine, he received numerous awards recognizing both his clinical excellence and dedication to teaching.
Following two decades in academic psychiatry, Dr. Koval transitioned into executive leadership as Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of the private charity, Kidspeace, a unique psychiatric hospital dedicated to serving the behavioral and mental health needs of children, families and communities. In this role, he oversees the medical staff and clinical operations across Pennsylvania and other states in which KidsPeace provides services. He maintains a strong focus on clinical quality, patient safety, and the delivery of comprehensive behavioral healthcare to children, families, and adults.
Answering the call of the Bluegrass, Dr. Koval later relocated to Lexington, Kentucky—drawn not only by professional opportunity, but also by a deep appreciation for the region’s rich equestrian heritage and the beauty of horse country.
